The proposed legislation requiring producers of college sports team jerseys, video games and trading cards to pay royalties to the college athletes whose name, image, or likeness (NIL) is used, has been approved by both chambers of the state legislature and is headed to the governor to be signed into law.
Senate Bill 1505, sponsored by Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem) and co-sponsored by Senators James Manning, Jr. (D-Eugene) and Kate Lieber (D-Beaverton), was unanimously approved by the Senate earlier this month and passed in the House (47-7) on Wednesday. SB 1505, which expands on the state’s existing NIL law passed last year that was also sponsored by Courtney and Manning, will need to be signed by Gov. Kate Brown to go into effect immediately, with the royalty payments requirement to begin July 1.
