When the first iPhones became readily available, the App store (or Play store, depending on your persuasion) was a minefield of €0.99 games that took up hours of attention
The crème de la crème of mobile games were easy to learn and endlessly addictive, giving players the much needed validation for neglecting everything else around you.

You know a game is successful when you have pop culture inspired sequels. Angry birds was perfected the balance of easy to learn gameplay and entertaining variety.
