Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy blamed a malfunction on SoFi Stadium’s extravagant 360-foot, double-sided video board for his questionable clock management at the end of Sunday’s Cowboys-Chargers game.
With a little under 30 seconds left in Los Angeles’ home opener, the Cowboys faced a third-and-short at the Chargers 38-yard-line with one time-out remaining. But instead of running a play to inch further into field goal range, McCarthy let the clock run down to 0:04 seconds before ordering a 56-yard field goal.
McCarthy’s excuse was that a Dallas player erred in coming off the field – leaving them with 10 players – and that, when he glanced to see how much time was remaining, the game-clock had been taken off the giant video scoreboard.
