Hot on the heels of the news that Activision Blizzard will be joining the Xbox family, Sony now apparently wants to flash a little cash — the PlayStation team today announced that it would be acquiring Bungie in a $3.6 billion deal.
Bungie has been on a wild ride, having previously been picked up by MS in 2000 as a first-party Xbox studio responsible for a series that would define Microsoft’s console family in the early Halo games. Microsoft later let Bungie go independent in 2007, with the studio then signing a ten-year publishing deal with Activision, which was terminated in 2019 as Bungie continued to support Destiny 2 as a wholly independent team. And now, the former house of Halo has joined the PlayStation family, even if it’s not entirely clear at this stage what — if anything — this news means for Bungie fans on other platforms.
